On a sunny morning in Malahide, a gentleman, with a hat on, was watching Ireland take on The Netherlands just behind the mid-wicket fence. He was Jody Morgan - the father of England’s World Cup winning captain, Eoin Morgan.
Jody, as we learnt from him, loves to watch Ireland play. Eoin Morgan has played his early cricket at Malahide. His first international appearance in Dublin came way back in 2007 for Ireland against the West Indies where he managed an unbeaten 37 before rain played spoilsport.
His first international appearance at Malahide came a long way later -- in 2013, this time against Ireland. Morgan was not only playing for England but also, leading them. Chasing 270 for a win, Morgan’s 124* helped England beat the Irish with ease. Six years later, Morgan lead England to their first-ever World Cup glory.
“We didn’t speak, we just hugged...because we know....” these were Jody Morgan’s words when they met their son on July 14 at Lord’s. It was a dream come true not only for the Morgan household but also for the entire country.
But what were his emotions?
“It’s only something a dad can feel really. You have to have a son to appreciate that. Nobody can tell what your son is going to achieve. To achieve that and to set it in four years, I suppose, even longer comes along his aim to go at the top level in everything,” Jody told et20s.com in a candid conversation..
Ireland and The Netherlands were facing each other in the GS Holding T20I Tri Series. Being a proud member of the Malahide Cricket Club, Jody often comes around to watch Ireland in action.
“Irish cricket is going very well at the moment, they’re doing very well. I’m impressed with their twenty-over side. It’s kind of a good sign.”
Jody was optimistic and happy about Ireland’s progress in world cricket.
Eoin Morgan was drafted by the Dublin Chiefs earlier this year for the Euro T20 Slam. So what was it like? Did the Morgan family discuss of his return to Malahide?
“Absolutely. We would love to see him, the last time he was here, he didn’t get a lot of runs, but he got two hundreds here at different stages for England. So loves it here again.”
Eoin was dismissed for a duck during his last visit. Gary Wilson, the current T20I captain, was involved in the dismissal.
Jody is expected to be at Malahide Cricket Club even on Friday when Ireland take on Scotland. The winner of the game will win the GS Holding T20I Tri-Series.
